Biblical allusions

"When the four horsemen came - schoolteacher, one nephew, one slave catcher, and a sheriff- the house on Bluestone Road was so quiet they thought that they were too late" (Morrison pg. 147)

The four horsemen

The four horsemen is a direct reference to the Bible. Sethe's brief happiness and safety as a runaway is abruptly ended with the coming of the horsemen. They signify the end of the good she's experienced, as they do the same in the book of Revelation in the Bible for the end of the world. Baby Sugg's feast also exemplifies the parable of Jesus multiplying the bread and fish, as she makes enough food for the whole crowd with just blueberries. Inferno also incorporates the Bible, such as Dante meeting St Peter, Lucifer, and his journey as a whole.
