If they make us sick then they are known as pathogens

They are called microbes as they are microscopic, and therefore require a microscope to see them. They can only be seen by the naked eye if there are millions, or billions of them in the same area. This is known as a colony.

We are going to try and grow a colony of different microbes we find around the school.
