Autism now affects 1 in 68 children and 1 in 42 boys
The disorder occurs four times more often in boys (usually the first-born) than in girls, with one in every 94 boys diagnosed with autism or another ASD. However, girls with the disorder generally have more severe symptoms and greater intellectual impairment.
According to the CDC, of the approximately four million infants born every year, 24,000 of them will ultimately be diagnosed as autistic.
