In Hmong, this is paper money.

Animism is the belief in the spirit world and in the interconnectedness of all living things. As you see in the photos these are mostly the things Hmong people use for rituals, reasons like if someone is really sick or an evil spirit has taken a soul of a human, a shaman (father/master of spirits) ties a white, red, black or blue string on the person who is being taken away. The reason is to protect the person from evil spirits.

Religion: Shamanism or Animism

These can be used for funerals, we fold paper into boats. Another name for it is spirit money as well. For funerals we take 3-12 days and for American-Hmong funerals 2-4 days. During the burial the spirit money or paper money is being burned. Something that Hmong people believe is that the spirit either stays with the body or its wandering.

Paper Money

Paper money is decorated with red squares and gold stamped paper. These are on walls in some houses because this protects or guards the house from evil spirits coming inside the house.
