The Trading-Post Empire of Portuguese
By the mid 16th century Portuguese merchants had built more than fifty trading posts between west Africa and east Asia. The Portuguese mariners who built the earliest trading post empires's goal was to control trade routes by forcing merchant vessels to call at fortified trading sites and pay duties there.
