This was a belief that after Muhammad there were twelve religious leaders all descendants of Muhammad. The twelfth leader went into hiding around 874, but he will return and spread his true religion after so much time for meditation. Followers of this belief wore red hats with twelve pleats. They came to be known as qizilbash ("Red Heads").
