✏ ️Ernest Everett Just was born on August 14, 1883 in Charleston, South Carolina.
✏ ️His father and grandfather were dock builders and both died of alcoholism.
✏ His mother taught at an African-American school to support Just and his younger brother and sister. Ernest's mother, Mary Matthews noticed that there was so much vacant land near the island and persuaded other black families to move there to farm. The town in which they farmed and founded was eventually named Maryville after Ernest's mother.
