The Berlin Conference

-This conference was the means of instituting imperialism in Africa

-Bismarck preferred peace and balanced power over military conflict, thus creating

this system

--it involved the laying out of rules for peaceful competition to colonize Africa between the large powers of Europe

-Originally, Bismarck wanted to defend the newly-unified Germany, rather than expanding

--however, he chose to colonize because there were still some areas in Africa yet unclaimed
