I was born in Spencer, Massachusetts on July 9th 1819, and I started working on the farm at age 16,then left because I wanted to apprentice in a machine shop. Due to a financial problem, I lost that job. So I moved to Boston and found work making tools and other scientific equipment. One day, a costumer came into the shop with a knitting machine and I gave him the idea to make a sewing machine instead. That costumer didn't think it could be done, but I did.
In 1846 I received a patent for my invention, the sewing machine. The invention didn't sell right away so I had to prove to the public that this is the next big thing. I raced 5 other seamstresses, I finished 5 entire seams before any other seamstress finished 1.
