Pros of protectionism

Saves jobs in domestic industries, if forced to compete against a

foreign country that produces steel more cheaply, then that domestic

industry will have to lay off hundreds or thousands of workers in

order to stay competitive


Keeps the domestic economy flowing. Since there is a decrease in

imports, domestic firms have less competition, and so are able to

continue. tariffs will protect it from foreign competitors. This

allows companies in the new industry time to learn how to produce the

good efficiently, and develop their own competitive advantages.


The barriers of the U.S. Should be as strong as the other counties. In

theory, the use of tariffs subsidies as bargaining chips at the

negotiating table with other countries.
