The Outcome of the Battle

The first battle happened on the eve of July 18, 1863. Shaw led the 54th Massachusetts Regiment against Fort Wagner which ended in heavy losses to the Union Regiment. The Confederates won that first attack by holding the fort. Later the Union finally over came the confederates and took the fort on September 17, 1863.
