-doesn't like his job

-not a skeleton figure with a scythe and black robe

-looks like us

Death in unavoidable and difficult:

-World War 1 causes many deaths

-Many characters face the hardships of death

- Liesel and Max have guilt and nightmares

- Michael Holtzapfel hangs himself after son's death

- Death is harder for those who survive
