The end of their rule
Any sign of insurrection or revolt was brutally quashed before it could get out of hand by William. By the time he had died in 1087, there was virtually no part of England that was controlled by an Englishman. William was very clever in the way he allocated the land holdings or manors. By issuing in such a way that they were dispersed up and down the country, each tenant in chief was unable to rebel or muster enough men to challenge William.
