D A V I D S P I L L E R

(b. 1942)

A veteran of the British Pop Art movement, David Spiller grew up in the defining period for post-war British Pop Art. British Pop Art began in the mid 1950’s, several years before the American Pop Art movement. Parody and irony were used by British Pop Artists to focus on the powerful influence that American culture had on life and societal prosperity. British Pop Artists explored this influence from afar while the Americans explored it from within.

Classically trained in fine art, and an early student of Frank Auerbach, Spiller is often classified as a urban artist focused on the use of graffiti. In his distinguished career, Spiller has had solo exhibits in over 10 countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, Spain and the United States). His work has been included in numerous top tier art fairs, including Masterpiece London. In 2013, his first Retrospective was held at The Portland Gallery, London. His works are in important private and corporate collections worldwide.

When asked about his art, Spiller has said “I really want to make paintings that put some magic on the wall. Some of them are straightforward things. Some are wild things. But underneath, it says ‘I love you.’”
