Cultural Connection

There are many obvious connections between The Coral Island and Lord of the Flies.

This is due to the fact that Lord of the Flies was written in response to The Coral Island. William Golding believed that behavior of the three British boys was too polite and clean kept. He decided to rewrite the novel in his own way to portray them as more animal-like and savage.

In fact, to make his direct point, he used many of the same main character names to tell his version of the tale. Jack and Ralph are still the main characters and find conflict with each other and the environment. However, Golding's copy of the novel was more popular. He was better able to grasp the accuracy of their emotions and so his book is more popular today.
