Why and how he invented the basketball game

He wasinspired by a children's game called duck-on-a-rock, in which players throw a small rock at a "duck" placed on top of a large rock in an attempt to knock the "duck" off. So he think it should be more creative and for the student to play so he asked the school janitor for a couple of boxes to use as goals, but all the janitor could come up with  baskets so he tacked them to the edge of a running track encompassing the gymnasium 10 feet off the floor

James created the sport within 2 weeks after the school asked him to come up with an indoor sport  with small space  for the students to be active during the severe New England winter

Why he invented it

The ball had to be retrieved by someone on a ladder after each goal. Soon after, the bottoms were cut out, which make the students more interested

Naismith's class was composed of 18 students, some older than his 30 years. He divided the class into teams of nine
