Sofonisba Anguissola was born in Cremona, Italy during the 1500s to Blanca Ponzone and Amilcare Anguissola. Growing up, Sofonisba received tutoring from Bernardino Campi, a portrait painter. She strived to make it acceptable for females to be students of the arts. After her initial tutoring, Sofonisha traveled through Italy and later received recognition from Michelangelo. In result of her remarkable addition to the Renaissance, women were influenced to also partake in the arts and the restrictions put upon women and the arts were abolished.
