The dragonfish is a rare example of red bioluminescent emissions. The long wavelength of red light travels a shorter distance in water than blue or green light; this means that the majority of marine creatures are not equipped to see or create red bioluminescence.

Red bioluminescent light is so uncommon in the marine world that rare exceptions like dragonfish use this to their evolutionary advantage. Because most marine creatures do not have eyes adapted to seeing red light, the dragonfish can use the red beams it produces like night vision goggles to sneak up on prey.
