A semipermeable membrane allows some components in a mixture through, but not others. Membrane distinguish components in two ways;

-some membranes act as “molecular sieve” that discriminates between large and small molecules

-some membranes dissolve one

component better than

others

-components flow

spontaneously from

the high concentration

to low concentration side
