Every time one of the volcanos on the island are active, that means that they are under the hotspot. The islands that were previously on the hotspot, move away and eventually become dormant. The current hotspot is beneath the island named Hawaii, though as the plate slowly moves, a new island will eventually be created. Which is what is happening right now.
