On March 25, 1911, on the eighth floor or the Asch Building in Manhattan, a cigarette was thrown into a bin unextinguished starting the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. It spread quickly, and the workers were trapped because the owners kept the door locked to prevent the workers from stealing. Many workers jumped while others were left inside. This brought attention to the dangerous conditions. Many laws were made to protect vulnerable workers. The building is now a historic landmark.
