Why Gandhi is important to India's independence
Gandhi joined the INC (Indian national congress), he traveled around India to find struggles in indian's people and communities. It was when he was traveling that he started to become popular throughout the country. He found problems like poverty and famine so he lead a team that fixed or built new buildings. He was arrested by Britain landlords for causing unrest but talked his way out of it. India now gave him the nickname of Bapu which means father. He was arrested many more times after that. After he finally got out of jail he lead a boycott in the 1920's which called for Indians to not buy any products that were from Britain. This lead up to his most famous protest.
Gandhi helped India gain independence by protesting peacefully he did this through many ways, but one protest caught thousands of people's attention. This was called the salt march. This march took place when Britain put a tax on the salt. Gandhi walked 241 miles to the sea to make his own salt, thousands of Indians joined him in the march.
India gained independence in 1947 when Gandhi was 78. Some people say that independence for India was going to happen after world war 2, but most think that it wouldn't have happened without the foundation of millions of people in India built by Gandhi.
