Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts, on July 12, 1817. Thoreau began to write nature poetry in the early 1840s. Famous poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson, became Thoreau's greatest mentor and friend. In 1845, Thoreau began his famous stay at Walden pond, where he built a small home for himself and was inspired to write his greatest work, Walden. Thoreau later became well-known for his transcendentalism and abolitionist beliefs.
