Although the Allied forces were successful against the Japanese, there were many casualties. Over 600 Australian soldiers dead, more than 1,600 wounded, and around 4,000 were infected by tropical diseases. The amount of Japanese deaths are uncertain, however they are most likely higher than the Allied amount because many suicides would have been committed due to their tradition of never surrendering.
Outcome & Significane
The Kokoda Campaign was the first time Australia's safety was under direct threat, however it has been accepted that the Japanese hadn't planned on invading Australia. The campaign was brought about because at the time the threat felt real and therefore the battle is said to have 'saved Australia' and has become apart of the ANZAC legend.
The Allied forces are praised for their efforts during the battle because they were able to defeat the strong and advanced Japanese army with little knowledge about the destination and the conditions they were entering. The orders given by commanders were sometimes unsuitable for the situation they were in, but in the end the strategy led to victory. A bond between America and Australia was created during the campaign and both forces were able to tighten their security due to learning what their weaknesses were.
