Monroe Doctrine

The Monroe Doctrine warned European states against imperialist designs in the Western Hemisphere.

The United States became a major imperial power by winning the Spanish-American War. They took possession of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam.

After gaining control in the Philippines, the U.S. established a colonial government there.
