Colonization

The original inhabitants of Cuba were the indigenous Ciboney and other Arawak speaking groups. As a result of the island's location at the entrances to the Gulf of Mexico, as well as the Yucatán Channel, it was used by the early Taino Arawak (4000 BCE) in their original migrations from Belize and the Yucatán and across the windward passage to Hispaniola.
