The major mass extinction during the Paleocene era was of the plant species. There was a major disaster that affected the environment greatly. As originally proposed in 1980 by a team of scientists led by Luis Alvarez, it is now generally thought that the K–Pg extinction was triggered by a massive comet or asteroid impact 66 million years ago[3] and its catastrophic effects on the global environment. Some of the main scientists of this era were Luis Alvarez.
