What was Sonar used for during WWII?

Sonar was used against German submarines. The Germans began to use submarines in an attempt to cut off British shipping, which Britain depended on for important  war materials and food.  The use of sonar allowed the British surface fleet to be able to see the direction and depth of these submarines and destroy many of them.
