why was saint valentine martyred?

- two theories:

1. he was a priest in 3rd century, emperor claudius outlawed marriages in soldiers but saint valentine kept performing marriages in secret

2. he was in prison and found a way to make a system that could send letters to loved ones outside; while he was in jail he converted people to christianity
