This chapter was important because it showed Stevenson’s perseverance even when all his clients got executed in the end. He struggled, unfortunately failed to attain stays for all three of his clients. The chapter highlighted how the government was not working for the people at the time, making for an injustice system. Today, all of these rulings would have definitely been different because of the policies that have been passed since the late 1980’s. Although Alabama judges still can overrule juries, Lindsey’s verdict may have been different today since the “tough on crime” political hype has seen less a emphasis. Duncans’s case would certainly have received a stay if Atkins v. Virginia had already played out, which deemed executing the mentally disabled as a “cruel or unusual punishment” under the constitution . Even Richardson’s case would have had a better chance of receiving stay today because of our better understanding of PTSD and its effects.
