Why was penicillin necessary during WWII?

It cured sickness, also Alexander had given up on trying to make the penicillin. Years later people had helped to make the discovery go farther. A couple months later. They had found the right antibiotics to put in the penicillin, soon later Alexander was labeled with "creator of penicillin"
