Police officer Rick Grimes was shot during a police chase. He wakes up from his coma, all alone in a hospital. He quickly finds that the zombie apocalypse has begun and the dead come back to life as flesh eating zombies. And he is all alone.

His wife and son believed that Rick had died, so when the apocalypse started, they fled to Atlanta. Rick sets out on his mission to find his family, learns how to survive against the zombies. He also meets other survivors who survive with him, and others, who cause a long conflict on the road to survival.
