Phospholipid bilayer

Hydrolytic enzyme mixture

Membrane transport proteins

Parts of a lysosome

Just like a regular cell, lysosomes have their own lipid bilayer. However, this membrane has a higher concentration of transport proteins to allow passage of food particles and other molecules to be destroyed.

The mixture contained inside the lysosome contains powerful enzymes that digest and break down food and other bodies into simpler materials that can either be reused by the cell or released as waste.

Lysosomes have many transport proteins because of the many materials leaving the cell and the many molecules that enter the cell to be digested.
