-Roy Wilkins was born on August 30, 1901, in St. Louis, Missouri.

-is mom died when he was 4 so he and his siblings moved to St. Paul Minnesota to live with their maternal aunt

-he majored in sociology and journalism at the U of M

-while in school he worked as and editor for the university newspaper and the African-American periodical The St. Paul Appeal.

-graduated from the school in 1923

-he married social worker Aminda "Minnie" Badeau in 1929.
