The movement began in Jamaica during the 1930’s. Marcus Garvey led the organisation ‘universal negro improvement association’ and Marcus said the quote, “Look to Africa where a black king shall be crowned, he shall be your redeemer” and that quote became the foundation of the movement. The quote by Marcus soon became a prophecy which the followed the crowning of Emperor Haile Selassie the first which then gave another name to the movement: Haile Selassie. Emperor Haile was seen as the figure of salvation and was believe he would redeem the blacks from the whites and bring them back to Africa.
