Potential energy is the energy an object has because of its position. It is also stored energy.

Energy is doing work or causing change.

Two of the most common examples are a bike on the top of the hill, and a roller coaster on the First hill. As your bike sits on the top you are storing energy. Same as the roller coaster. The energy on the first hill is stored so you can go up again on the other hills.
