He left the Dominican Republic to study painting at the royal academy of fine arts of San Fernando in Madrid.

He worked in a Madrid Salon of Cristóbal Balenciaga, where his job was to sketch dresses for clients.

In 1956, his dress landed on the cover of life magazine for the first time in his career.
