The horrid Salute

The hitler salute was a way to get people to view hitler as less man and more god. The word "hail" meant health and blessing, and thus people both blessed hitler and gave the image that he would bless the recipient. It also replaced the handshake, alienating people and pooling them only in their support of hitler's dictatorship.
