Pathos

An appeal to the audience’s emotions directly concerns the way that the audience responds emotionally to the speech/essay/etc. In other words, it’s all about getting your audience emotionally connected.

*Plain-Folks Appeal- Attempt to convince public that views of famous people reflect the views of common people

Glittering Generality- an emotionally appealing phrase so closely associated with highly valued concepts and beliefs that it carries conviction without supporting information or reason.

Appeal to Guilt- words are phrases intended to make the audience feel sorry for the speaker or bad about their own behaviors/contributions to the problem

Appealing to Pathos

Appeal to Patriotism- when truth is determined by what makes one feel and look patriotic.

Name-Calling- Use derogatory language to bring up negative connotations

Tone- the speaker or author’s attitude toward the subject

Appeal to Fear- Frighten audience into agreeing with no logical argument to fall on

Appeal to Flattery/Pride- excessive compliments, in an attempt to win support for their side.

Text*Simile- involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid

*Metaphor- identifies one thing as being the same as some unrelated other thing, thus strongly implying the similarities between the two.

Imagery- the formation of mental images, figures, or likenesses of things or of such images collectively using one or more of the senses

Experiences/ Anecdote- a short, often amusing or interesting story about a real incident or person.

Diction- the distinctive tone or tenor of an author's writings. Diction is not just a writer's choice of words it can include the mood, attitude, dialect and style of writing

Cause/Effect- a scenario is presented with a potential cause & effect outcome

If/Then- a scenario is presented with a potential if/then cause

Personal Connection with Audience- Establish common ground with your audience. What problems do you have in common? What goals do you have in common?
