In this chapter the author goes over the use of symbolic blindness in certain situations. Take The Cay for example. It is a book about a racist boy named Timothy who gets shipwrecked on an island. During the shipwreck Timothy suffers a head wound that renders him blind. While he's on that island he has to relay on a black man named Philip. This is an example of both Physical and symbolic blindness. Since Timothy is blind he isn't aware that Philip is black therefore he looks past that and realizes that race doesn't matter.
42 is a movie about the famous baseball player Jackie Robinson. Jackie Robinson played for Brooklyn Dodgers in the late 40's and early 50's. He had to face a lot of adversity but in the end he had a good support system, his teammates. They looked past his race and accepted him for he was that is symbolic blindness.
