CLASS FORMAT

THE PART THAT’S REALLY DIFFERENT

AND ALSO AWESOME

At the beginning of class you have zero points. For every piece of work you complete, you earn points. Unlike in most classes, you will not be punished for making mistakes. You are only rewarded for your efforts.

As you earn points, you will level up. You start at level zero and can reach a maximum of level 14. Level 12 is required for an A in the class. Getting there is not easy, but it is possible for anyone. It’s just a matter of getting enough points. Remember, you never lose points. You only gain them. So if you need more points, just take on another challenge.

I’m your teacher. That’s actually pretty close to what I look like. I’m excited to have you with us in class. I hope you will approach this class as “serious fun.” We’ll really enjoy ourselves, but we’ll also be working hard. I hope you all experience personal growth this semester, in addition to improving your photographic skills.

AND ALSO AWESOME

This class is self-directed. This means you get to choose how quickly and in what order you work through the class material. It also means you are responsible for setting your own deadlines and making sure you complete all the requirements. The only due dates I will set are the end of term and end of semester, for report card purposes. More than any other class I know of, your grade in this class is truly in your hands.

Why do I do this? Because that’s how real life is. I hope you’ll learn photography, but I also hope you’ll learn how to responsibly take control of your own life. Another reason is to allow you some flexibility in how you approach the class. This should help you balance it with the many other demands placed on you.

AND ALSO AWESOME

There are two types of assignments in this class: Challenges and Pass-offs. Challenges are photography projects. You get to choose which challenges you want to do, but you should complete about one each week to stay on track for a good final grade. Pass-offs are skills checks. You will show me that you have mastered certain skills by demonstrating them to me. You also get to choose what order to do theses in, but unlike the challenges, you have to complete them all by the end of the class.

As you level up, you will get multipliers and other bonuses that help you gain points faster. You can also dramatically increase the value of your challenges by playing the dice game. All of your challenges are turned in on Canvas. There is also a presentation on Canvas explaining the dice game. It is to your advantage to play it with every challenge, but it is not required. Pass-offs are listed on Canvas, but are completed in class or after school.
