Early Canadian Expansion

• John A. Macdonald became the first prime minister of Canada. He wanted to incorporate all of British North America into the Dominion.

• He negotiated the purchase of the Northwest Territories from the Hudson's Bay Company in 1869

• He persuaded Manitoba, British Columbia, and Prince Edward island to join.

• Transcontinental railroad constructed in 1885 aided with expansion.
