The European continent was divided into competing political, military, and economic blocs-one dependent on the United States and the other subservient to the USSR. The fault lines of the Cold War were most visible in Germany. The blocs were split by the iron curtain. NATO was found to basically watch over the Soviets actions and make sure they do not do anything out of order.
