Experiment : Owl Pellet

Question : Can we identify what an owl ate by dissecting a pellet?

#1

Hypothesis : We will be able to figure out what an owl ate by picking the skeleton bones we find.

1. Tweezers
2. Magnifying glass
3. Scissors
4. Glass
5. Tray

Step 1 : describe, measure, observe, draw pellet

Step 2 : Carefully separate owl pellet in half with tweezers

Step 3 : Sort and identify bones

Step 4 : Assembly skeleton glue sheet

Step 5 : Discuss and conclude what your animal ate

Conclusion : You can sort of identity it but it's hard because you can mistake bones for other animals in this dissection. For example, if you find a bird skull while finding a mole scapula. You don't know if it ate multiple animals. I'd say its hard to dissect because it can get dirty and dusty and difficult to find bones what you want to match your animal.
