On August 29th of 1842, China signed the Treaty of Nanjing. However, the, "Unequal Treaty," was signed over a year later on October 8th of 1843.
It forced China to open 5 ports to foreign trade and pay twenty-one million silver dollars to Britain as compensation for opium earning losses and war costs.
