Both his parents being catholic, he was sent to the catholic school, Holy Angels, during grade school.

When he was 15 his parents sent him to a prestigious catholic prep school called the Newman school.

After graduating from the Newman school, he decided to pursue his career in writing at Princeton University. However, in 1917, he dropped out of Princeton and joined the army.
