Fritz Haber, a German Chemist, first experimented with the use of chlorine gas as a weapon in 1915. The German High Command was extremely skeptical of the idea, and viewed his experiments as more of stunts than actual science. He finally convinced one commander on the western front to test the weapon. When the gas attacks killed 1,100 soldiers, Haber's lack of support drastically changed.
