What are fossil fuels?

86%

Of U.S. energy consumption is fossil fuels

Definition

How are they formed?

Fossil fuels are organic materials obtained from former life and are used to release energy when they are burnt.

There are 3 types of fossil fuels:

1. Coal

2. Natural Gas

3. Oil

When dead plants are buried under many layers of mud and stone and with heat and pressure over millions of years coal is formed.

Natural gas and oil form with the same process except this time both dead plants and dead marine animals are buried.
