The narrator is the protagonist in the story because he goes through a change. After murdering the old man, he confesses his crime because he feels guilty. I would cast Adolf Hitler as the narrator because just as the narrator disliked the old man's eye, Hitler disliked anyone who didn't fit his ideal idea of beauty. Both never really had anything against the character of the people themselves, but both murdered people for a physical quality that bothered them. The difference between them, however, is that Hitler enjoyed killing the outcasts, while the narrator felt guilty and actually liked the old man.
