What to do if someone is choking?

The first step in first aid to help someone is choking is checking for consciousness (asking if he/she is ok) and asking for permission to assist. If they can speak, cough, or breathe, assistance is most likely not needed. If no response, proceed to the Heimlich Maneuver.
